Having skills and knowledge is not the same as being able to use them.
Assessments that measure what students
can actually do
TestQuill empowers your test developers to build machine-scored performance tasks that challenge students to apply what they have learned. At the same time, we have resolved the conflict between innovation and portability. Built on QTI standards with a redistributable PCI-based library, TestQuill's items can be delivered by any delivery system that supports QTI and its Portable Custom Interaction interface.
- QTI-Ready
- WCAG AAA
TestQuill is an enterprise item and task authoring, item banking, and workflow management system.
One System, Three Core Capabilities
TestQuill brings authoring, item banking, and workflow management together in a single enterprise platform — so your team can build, organize, and ship assessments without stitching tools together.
Authoring
A visual, code-free builder for the full range of QTI item types and PCI-based Technology Enhanced Items — including integrated, machine-scored performance tasks.

A searchable item bank with rich metadata, tagging, versioning, and reuse. Find, organize, and repurpose items and tasks across programs, forms, and administrations.
Explore item bankingWorkflow
Role-based review and approval stages, assignments, and status tracking. Move items from draft to review to publish with a full audit trail and team collaboration built in.

Everything You Need for Performance Assessment
From interactive science simulations to complex scoring logic — TestQuill handles the full lifecycle of performance task development.
Visual Task Builder
Start with any standard item type — multiple choice, drag-and-drop, graphing, open response — then combine them into integrated performance tasks, or use them standalone. Scoring on one task can depend on what the student did in other tasks, opening many paths to performing the task. All from a visual, code-free builder.
Phenomenon Simulations
Lightweight SVG-based simulations with standard HTML controls. Students manipulate variables, observe outcomes, and generate evidence — all within an accessible, browser-based environment.
Scoring
No special scoring engine is necessary. Testquill generates QTI response processing rules to ensure that every delivery engine can score even the most complex tasks.
Everything can be machine-scored using advanced AI techniques or routed to human scorers. Machine-scoring logic extends across item tasks allowing evaluation of one part to depend on responses in others.
One small custom operator is necessary for the most sophisticated scoring: "select." It is about six lines of code, and we will help you with it.
Universal Accessibility
Engineered to WCAG 2.2 Level AAA. Screen reader compatible, keyboard navigable, and designed using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles backed by empirical research.
Live Preview & Testing
Instantly preview tasks as students will experience them. Deploy functional drafts to a shared review site within days for real-time stakeholder feedback.
QTI 3.0 + PCI Import/Export
Imports and exports QTI 3.0, with the ability to convert semi-compliant QTI to fully compliant QTI 3.0 with the use of custom templates.

Intuitive Visual Task Builder
Build complex performance tasks without writing code. TestQuill's visual builder lets you compose integrated performance tasks by simply dragging widgets onto a canvas and linking tasks together.
- Drag-and-drop widget placement
- Visual task linking with dependency mapping
- SVG phenomenon rendering + HTML interaction controls
- Reusable widget templates and task templates
Advanced Dependency-Based Scoring
Define scoring rules that reflect the true complexity of performance tasks. Set up dependencies between tasks so scoring in one part can be informed by responses in another.
- Section-level and task-level scoring rules
- Conditional scoring based on response pathways
- Partial credit & weighted scoring models
- Scoring simulator to test all response combinations
Real-Time Task Preview
Each author and reviewer can experience each item just as the student will, including responding, and seeing how their responses will score.
- Deploy to shared review site for stakeholder feedback
- Test all interactive widget behaviors in-browser
- Cross-browser: Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox
Complete Item Type Library

Try Working Tasks Now
Interact with real tasks, including simulations and modeling.
Built on Open Standards. Accessible to All.
TestQuill is built from the ground up on open standards and Universal Design for Learning principles, ensuring every task is portable, accessible, and equitable.
QTI 3.0 Compliant
100% QTI-compliant task generation. Export as QTI packages or standalone simulations — your choice, your flexibility.
PCI (Portable Custom Interactions)
Technology Enhanced Items implemented as PCIs, ensuring correct rendering on any QTI-compatible delivery system.
WCAG 2.2 Level AAA Accessible
Screen reader compatible (aria-describedby), keyboard navigable, alternate input device support. Zoom, pan, and interactive descriptions built in as standard components.
Universal Design for Learning
Research-backed scaffolding that structures interactions and evidence production — proven more effective than superficial accommodations for persistently low-performing students.
Your Simulations. Your Code. Forever.
We believe the work you commission should belong to you — fully, permanently, and without dependency on any vendor.
Perpetual License
The redistributable simulation player license is perpetual — it never expires. Use it to run any simulation created by TestQuill, indefinitely.
Transferable
The license is transferable. Share simulations with districts, vendors, partners, or anyone else — they can host and use them freely.
